General Announcements

PLAN test results are in! If you took the PLAN, you can pick up your test results in the Guidance Office.

There is a mandatory meeting for all LINK Crew Leaders today right after school in the forum!
If you cannot attend you must see Mr. Trotter!

Person 1: Hey, do you know how many scientists were onboard each space capsule launched during NASA’s Gemini Space Program?
Person 2: No, I don’t!
Person 1: Yeah, you do! You learned it in fifth grade!
Person 2: ….No I didn’t.
Person 1: Well maybe our teachers know! You should come watch them take each other on with a team of fifth grade students in Arapahoe’s “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader”. It’s part of the LINK sponsored Teacher Talent Show this year!
Person 2: Oh yeah! It’s on Thursday, February 7th, at 7pm in the auditorium! We can go watch teachers doing some really funny and talented performances that night too! Should I buy tickets at the door or during lunch?
Person 1: Either way is fine as long as you bring $5. Oh, and you should take notes during the talent show. I think you need a refresher on your 5th grade science.

Spanish Club will be going to the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant next Tuesday night, February 5th for a fun night of salsa dancing! Join us in experiencing culture with rhythms and great food, and dance the night away! See Ms. DiSepio to sign up ~ all are welcome.

Congratulations to our talented mathematicians. Ryan Beckett earned a perfect score on the first round of the University of Northern Colorado Math Competition! He and 14 other AHS students are invited to participate in the Final Round on February 2nd on the Greeley Campus. Please congratulate our winning participants: Matthew Arnold, Lane Childers, Matt Cullen, Sean Egan, Kevin Fiorini, Alexis Fons, Natalie Jones, Lara McDougald, Mary Cate McPherson, Tom Roberts, Matt Schmidt, Michelle Shebowich, Kyle Stachowiak and Spencer Zepelin.

Athletics

The boys basketball team would like to thank the loyal fans who cheer them on at their games. Friday they play Mt. Vista on our home court. Come and support your Arapahoe boys basketball team and you may go home with a cookie bouquet!

Attention AHS Girls Lacrosse Players! Enjoy an extra hour of sleep on Friday morning as your Speed Camp has been canceled. See you next Tuesday morning at 6:00 a.m.!

Arapahoe took first place and Grandview took 2nd and 3rd in the Dive meet last Wednesday evening. Congratulations to Dani Howe for placing first with her highest state qualifying score of 232.9 this year.

Suit and equipment sizing will be available. Orders will be placed this evening. Late orders can not be guaranteed to arrive by our first meet. Boys please come and bring your parents. Thank you.

Qualifying at this weekend's National Forensic League Student Congress was Will Hea who will be going to Speech and Debate National finals in Las Vegas. Ben Horblit is an alternate and Nathan Arnold placed 5th! Congratulations, guys!

Athletics

The Special Olympic Basketball team has a game tonight at the Arapahoe High School main gym at 7:00 p.m. The team will be playing Transition. Tonight we will have a special announcer. Mike Haynes, the voice of the Colorado Avalanche Hockey team on Radio for the last ten years will be here to announce. So come out to cheer the team on.

The theme this year is Royal Blizzard Ball. The attire is semi-formal, no jeans are allowed.

This dance is a Sadie Hawkins dance which means that the girls invite the boys. Tickets are on sale today at lunch and the prices are $10 per person in advance and $15 at the door.

All Speech and Debate competitors participating in this weekend's NFL Congress need to stop by Ms. Graham's desk to sign the entry as soon as possible.

Those of you interested in entering national competition for scholarships and prizes may be interested in entering the Arapahoe School-wide poetry competition sponsored by Poetryoutloud.org. The Arapahoe student who memorizes an 8 - 60 line poem and performs today, after school in the forum may represent Arapahoe in the Denver area competition on February 19. If you are interested, see Ms. Graham or speak to your English teacher.

Good luck to all members of the Wind Ensemble who will be departing for the Broadmoor Hotel this afternoon. They will be performing a concert tomorrow at 11:45am, on the stage of the International Center of The Broadmoor. Arapahoe was chosen as 1 of just 3 high school bands to perform in the 2008 state music educators clinic/conference!

Also, feel free to join us at the Colorado Humane Society Saturday, February 9th!

Habitat for Humanity members will be passing around house banks this week to benefit the Youth United Habitat House. Please donate in your classes.

Attention Young Democrats – There will be an important meeting after school today in room C-6. One of the items of discussion will be debates with the Young Republicans. So gather your friends who support the Democratic Party and come to the meeting on Wednesday.

Attention all Student Council Officers and Members! If you are planning on attending the tri school retreat you must be at our next Student Council meeting to obtain more information and paper work. Our next STUCO meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 22nd at 6:45am in the forum. Remember all students are welcome to attend Student Council meetings.

The Muse literary and art magazine has extended its deadline to tomorrow January 18th. To submit poetry, essays, and stories go to the website on the AHS Homepage through Activities. Submit art to Mrs. Hitchens in the Art Department. You will be informed of your acceptance into the Muse on February 6th. Remember, SUBMIT!

Juniors and Seniors are invited to sign up for the ASVAB Career Exploration Program – a comprehensive career exploration and planning program designed to help students learn about their interest and explore the world of work. All you have to do to take advantage of this program is take the ASVAB. If you are not already signed up, see your counselor. Testing is scheduled at our school on February 5th at 2:45 pm., in Room N2. Do your best and enjoy all the benefits the ASVAB Program has to offer. For more information, see your counselor.

General Announcements

Arapahoe will be holding its annual Winter Dance on January 26th from 7-10 pm in the cafeteria.

The theme this year is Royal Blizzard Ball. The attire is semi-formal, no jeans are allowed.

This dance is a Sadie Hawkins dance which means that the girls invite the boys. If you are a 10, 11, or 12th grader and you want to invite someone from another school, permission forms are in the guidance office.

Tickets will go on sale January 22nd and the prices are $10 per person in advance and $15 per person at the door.

The Muse literary and art magazine has extended its deadline to tomorrow January 18th. To submit poetry, essays, and stories go to the website on the AHS Homepage through Activities. Submit art to Mrs. Hitchens in the Art Department. You will be informed of your acceptance into the Muse on February 6th. Remember, SUBMIT!

Juniors and Seniors are invited to sign up for the ASVAB Career Exploration Program – a comprehensive career exploration and planning program designed to help students learn about their interest and explore the world of work. All you have to do to take advantage of this program is take the ASVAB. If you are not already signed up, see your counselor. Testing is scheduled at our school on February 5th at 2:45 pm., in Room N2. Do your best and enjoy all the benefits the ASVAB Program has to offer. For more information, see your counselor.

Are you dramatic? Do you read poetry aloud to the mirror, your best friend, your cat? Those of you interested in entering national competition for scholarships and prizes may be interested in entering the Arapahoe School-wide poetry competition sponsored by Poetryoutloud.org. The Arapahoe student who memorizes an 8 - 60 line poem and performs next Wednesday afternoon, January 23, after school in the forum may represent Arapahoe in the Denver area competition on February 19. If you are interested, see Ms. Graham or speak to your English teacher.

The boys basketball team will meet Chaparral at home tonight. The varsity team's record is 11 wins and 1 loss in overtime. Friday the basketball team will play Gateway at home. Come and support your team and some fan will be taking home a cookie bouquet and six fans will get a coupon for a FREE DQ.

General Announcements

Arapahoe High School has been selected to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, which is also known as The Nation’s Report Card. NAEP is based on a sample of students in schools throughout the country and the results of this assessment influence the decisions of national policy makers. Not every student will be chosen to participate, but those who are chosen will be representing hundreds of high school seniors across our nation. You will be notified within the next week if you have been chosen to represent Arapahoe for this assessment. More information will be provided in the next couple of weeks.

Tonight will be a very special preview concert in our theatre! Our Downbeat Music Magazine Award Winning Wind Ensemble will perform a preview concert of their upcoming invitational performance at the Colorado Music Educators 2008 Convention at The Broadmoor Hotel on January 24th!! The Arapahoe Wind Ensemble is 1 of only 3 high school bands selected to perform at the state convention this year!!! The free concert starts at 7pm, and will feature a world premiere of the Brahms’ “Hungarian Dances,” transcribed for Wind Ensemble by Dr. Singleton, from UNC-Greeley. He will be conducting the premiere performance by our Wind Ensemble tonight – don’t miss it!

Attention Academic Peer Coaches! Please see Mr. Low in the Study Center as soon as possible to verify your scheduled period for the Spring Semester!

Congratulations to the following students for being selected to the prestigious 2008 Colorado All State Band - Junior, Wes Leffingwell, and Seniors, Roxy Steinberg, Abbe Haller, Matt Cullen, Dave Ellis, and Katie Cassara. Congrats also to alternates - Senior, Carissa Pierce and Junior, Melanie Brown. Congratulations to the following musicians for being selected to the 2008 CU Honor Band: Seniors, Roxy Steinberg,Emily Morgan, and Matt Cullen; and Juniors, Jordan Flatt and Alyssa Barton.
